Charles University was established in 1348 becoming the 1st university in Central Europe. Charles unified Brandenburg, Lusatia and Silesia all beneath the Czech crown. In between Planet War I and World War II, few Czechs immigrated to the United States. Following Globe War II, a final major Czech migration occurred, as these newer immigrants sought to escape financial hardship, communist takeover, and political instability in Czechoslovakia. With respect to the former nobility, restitution has had mixed results.
